Poncha is the most traditional drink in Madeira!

It's a case of saying: Anyone who goes to Madeira and doesn't drink Poncha cannot be proud of truly knowing the pearl of the Atlantic.

Despite being typical of the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, Poncha is known and appreciated throughout the island. It can be drunk both in summer with ice and in winter, as they contain a lot of vitamin C.

In the past, Poncha was made only with sugar cane spirit, adding the same amount of water, sugar and small lemon peels as needed.

Over the years this recipe has been perfected, currently, sugar cane spirit is the timeless element, the innovation was the mixture of bee honey with juice lemon. For the more daring and adventurous, I recommend trying the most varied flavors of this drink, such as passion fruit Poncha, tangerine, orange, others... These flavors are obtained by replacing honey, in the case of fruits, or of brandy, in the case of drinks.

If the spirit does not change, in recent times experiments have been carried out with other flavors, such as English tomatoes, kiwi, among other fruits, and customer opinions vary on the subject.

Nowadays, several types of Poncha are served, but the original one is made with sugarcane spirit, lemon juice and honey, as is the case with Poncha Regional which It is made with half lemon juice and half orange juice. We add bee honey, according to the customer's taste, then equalize the same amount of juice but in brandy. Put all these ingredients in a container and mix well with the traditional mexilote (mexilhote, mechelote) or pau de Poncha. Finally, just mix well, and it's ready. Delicious!

At Quinta Estação, Poncha continues to be made the old-fashioned way, the traditional version, with passion fruit and fisherman's style, freshly made, and for connoisseurs, without ice.

The best thing is to stop by and enjoy the true flavor of Traditional Madeiran Poncha!
